So sorry.  I just thought I was through blogging today’s events. After resting we decided to hike up to the upper village and watch the sun set.

A bit of history about the village of Roccatederighi (old and new). The medieval portion of the village rises on top of Mount Sassoforte, at 538 meters above sea level, wedged in an outcropping of volcanic rock from which there are incredible views of Upper Maremma. The site was probably known as a castle in 952 by the name of Rocca Norsina, and became Roccatederighi in 1239 when the Guaschi family were called “filii Tederighi”.

The medieval village of Roccatederighi remains one of the most interesting villages of the Maremma, with its towers and rooftops, some carved out of rock, perfectly camouflaged among enormous boulders of riolite.

Entrance to the old village is through a round-arched door, opened between rock and walls, from which you approach a tangle of alleys, arches and stairways.
We climbed to the top of the rock to watch the sunset. Sorry for all the pics but just couldn’t stop taking them. There’s a panoramic view from the top.

A cat joined us 😁. He’s camouflaged.

Kody, Kim said this isn’t Oklahoma but it ain’t too shabby either.
The ancient walls are still partially visible around the houses that surrounded the perimeter of the village.
Jo Anne, sitting here waiting for the sun to set reminded me of all the times we did the same in CA.

One of the most interesting buildings is the church of San Martino where the oldest part of the castle once existed.

Many of the homes are still occupied but most of the younger generation has moved down to the lower, more “modern” village as you obviously cannot drive a car thru these street to your home. everything must be carried up this very steep climb.

  1. Indeed not too shabby is an understatement! Just beautiful. That statue looks like a pretty solid character 🙂

  2. Beautiful! The door picture is so interesting. I wonder how many people have walked through that door. Makes me think of Christ standing on one side knocking!
